Tom Boeh, the Athletic Director at Fresno State University, made the decision on June 15, 2006 to drop the wrestling program without any warning.
The Fresno/Central Valley area is the hotbed of California wrestling and has had a very rich tradition. The loss of this program would impact wrestling in California significantly.
In Fresno State Wrestling Head Coach Shawn Charles' first year, he put together an incoming recruiting class that was ranked #15 in the nation by InterMat. The class includes two NHSCA Senior National All-Americans, both from the state of California, Adin Duenas and Josh Betancur. The program was not given a chance to prove itself under its new leader.
