who are they
The Best Underdogs EVER----Meaning Underrated wrestlers
Topic ID: 870 | 25 Posts
1. martinko (no one thoguht he could beat byrd or make it to the finals)
2. josh josnson (8th grader makin to the finals immpressive)
3. bryan hall no one thought he would go as far as he did
thats just this year
I think Joe Powers was underrated. He was ranked 4th in the state but no one thought that he would win state
i just reread the topic and it says ever so heres the ones i know of since i have been around
1. travis sullivan -no one thoguht he would win state
2. robert smith - lost to murton but could have made the finalson the other side
3. bradon howard-finalist last year no one thoguht it should ahve this year to got screwed
4. coty lewis-came back off some team problems did great and think he was underatted
5.wolsifer- no one thoguht he could handle cooper
In recent history I would have to give the nod to Mike Nolan his Jr. year.
Was JV most of the year until the varsity quit, he goes on to defeat Cooper in the state finals. He had lost by pin to Cooper several times in the past.
Last year another wrestler from Camp. Co. comes to mind. Hildreth at 160. Not many believed he could defeat Walls or Fyffe.
I would also have to give Powes some credit. Few believed he would win the title after loses to several 140's through out the year.
Nolan has my vote for most underated wrestler. He was a JV wrestler coming into the state tournament and walked away with a state title. Going into the tournament it was like "Who is Mike Nolan?"
Hildreth couldn't beat me . I beat him 11-3 at state dualls. Cooper wooped him in the finals also
I'm assuming you are one of the two I mentioned. That is the point, he was not suppose to defeat any of them, but he did defeat Walls in the semi's who defeated Fyffe in the Conolation finals.
He earned his second place finish by being "THE UNDERDOG" and defeating someone few believed he would.
Calm down no one is "dissing" anyone here.
Ya I dont think it should be taken personal. But he might have gotten "Wooped" but he got it under the lights. Which is better then getting it in the consos.

Wow, yes, I definetly agree with you here. Nolan was without a doubt the underdog that year and few had even heard of him.
Back in 2001, I would give my best underdog to Josh Muncy. He was also very little known and went from state qualifier in 2000 to state champion the next year. It goes to show how much hard work pays off for these "underdogs"
Whats amazing about Nolan is he spent much of his Jr. year at JV. He did not start wrestling Varsity until half way through the year after the varsity guy quit.
Hildreth beat Walls. Hildreth didn't wrestle Walls at the duels, but he did lose to Fyffe at the duels.
Hildreth was one of those guys that was on, or off. When he was on, he was on. He did beat Walls, who beat Fyffe for third. He was beat at the duels, soundly, but nobody cares about anything but the places at state. By the way, Courtney was beaten at the duels too. Doesn't make him a lesser man either.
The varsity guy did not quit the year Nolan won it all. There's a story there, and we'll leave as that. Nolan and he were back and forth in wrestle offs ... and a judgement call was made by the coaches. It looks like they made the right call, as they almost always do.
Nolan stepped up and got the job done. And, he made it back to the finals his senior year showing it wasn't completely a fluke. That is, showing it was indeed being underrated.

Grappler of Old....
yes Joe Powers was Highly underated and surprised everyone i beleive. But Joe didnt lose to several 140s...actually his ONLY losses were to theunemen in the finals of KOB,Woodford, and the dragon...each being a close match(loss by a point or so). Also joe lost to the woodford Kid in the last 5 seconds of the match at woodford duals...his record was like 42-4....thats highly impressive and for him to come back and take thunemen to a totally diffrent level than before....the kid had alot of heart and deserved the title. :-D
his record couldnt have been 42-4 because if he lost to theunemen three times and he lost to a woodford Kid and he also lost to aubery hayes at Jefferson County Tournament of Champions witch would make his record 42-5
My impression was that Powers lost to Thuenerman (Scott) 3 times.
Lost to Hayes (Jeffersontown) (I believe by pin)
Lost to Sheehan (Woodford Co.) (I believe by pin)
Usually a state champion does not get pinned in the regular season (unless they are 215 or Hwt) let alone twice.
This is why I chose him as a possible underrated (Underdog) candidate.
and if im not mistaken i dont think powers won a tournament all year except for region 3 regional tournament

yes he did lose to aubrey hayes...i forgot about that one :-(.Joe was hurt at the Jefferson county tournament,he was wrestling on one leg.Our coach didnt want him to wrestle but the kids a beast and he did anyway. If he wasnt hurt he NEVER would have been pinned. Also He BARELY got pinned by sheehan at woodford duals. Most didnt even think his shoulder was touching, but the pin was called theres nothing you can do about it a call is a call....

No Powers never won a tournament. He was in EVERY 140 finals (mostly with thunemen).Like I said all the mtches between powers and thunemen were very close and very exciting.
How about Josh Burkett beating Hines from LaRue? that was a prettybig upset.

Yeah i give ALOT of props to josh.He really pushed it at state.....cutting back down to 103 really helped him out.He belonged there, the 12's overpowered him.I beleive hell be a great 12 pounder next year if he lifts and gets bigger.

Was it the correct call?? Maybe for the team but I don't remember the old varsity kid wrestling again. Was one kid sacrificed for the better of the team? Wrestling is more than just wins and losses.

Nolan won state, and came back and was runner up the next year. They were neck and neck all year. Its therefore pretty hard to argue that from a pure talent perspect he didn't deserve it.
I saw Nolan wrestle varsity more than a handful of times that year as well, so the decision wasn't without precedent. Either Nolan had beaten him a few times, or there was something else going on. On the integrity front you gotta make a gut call, its not a decision i would have wanted to make either way, but i've heard very few question the integrity of a Campbell Co coaching decision.
But nonetheless, i'm getting off topic. Regardless of the question of whether it was a decision that sacrificed someone or not, Nolan was probably the biggest underdog ever.

Where did the other kid go? Im just wondering because I was told he quit and didnt come back and he was a heck of a wrestler. I talked to Nolan and said he would have probaly wrestled 71 the next year and would have been an animal. Just going from what I was told.
If Nolan doesn't recieve the "biggest underdog ever award" then no one does. Watching him go through the state tournement was not just exciting for Campbell Co. but for all of region 6, as well as an inspirations to JV wrestlers throughout the state.
The other guy was a wrestler with a lot of talent (Depperschmidt was his last name). I don't know why exactly he didn't come out his senior year, i figure its a personal decision he had to make. Had he come out his senior year, Campbell Co would have taken 2nd (in 2005), he'd have definitely scored the 6 or whatever handful of points they needed at 171 (he'd have placed) to overcome the Ryle/LaRue tie for 2nd.
