Covington Catholic to start Wrestling in 2013

Topic ID: 9001 | 88 Posts

Rumor has it that Covington Catholic is starting up in 2013. Sounds like the sport continues to grow in the Bluegrass!

Apparently there has been a club started on the Youth level already.  How quickly can they build a contender?  How much of a factor will being the only private school in northern Kentucky be?

Not sure how a private school can have a Youth program.

But didn't we hear this last year?

Believe it when I see it.

GOO- St. X and Trinity have youth feeder programs.  One is River City, not sure of the name of the other.  Someone help me out with the name please.

only middle next year

Cov cath does have a youth club. River city is trinity not sure what x is

No, River City is X, Shamrocks are Trinity.

Cov cath does have a youth club. River city is trinity not sure what x is

Wrong again as is usual with your post.

River city is St. X, Shamrock WC is Trinity.

I have talked to administrators at Cov Cath and not only are they starting their program they believe they have their coach already as well. I would know because I inquired about the position.

I know who they was courting last year. Hope that isn't who they got.

Would love to see another team being started in KY!

I know who they was courting last year. Hope that isn't who they got.

Who were they courting?

Great news. I firmly believe that the best way to build a strong high school program is through a strong youth program.

Well that too...but I was thinking more in lines of recruiting lol

Barnes

Barnes

Who?

It's not Barnes. It mighht have been last time around but this time it is not him. I know several names that applied for the position and interviewed. They should be announcing the position after the state tournament since the coach is currently coaching another Northern Kentucky school.

Seems like you have the insight, are you gonna share or were you asked to keep tight lipped on who it is?

I was asked to keep it tight lipped. Really not sure as to why but that was the request that was bestowed upon me.

Ok cool. I know last year out at dinner Boyle had just mentioned it about Barnes

I know that Bankamper interviewed for the position some time ago

Canter's new chapter.

And who is Barnes? From Platoon?

WV coach

Barnes is from Walton and is a great coach and was 1 heckuva a wrestler in h/s and college. I went to schoool with him

Barnes is a former hs state champ and an NCAA all American.

Barnes was in the mix early, but I hear that he is staying at WV

I know nothing but I'll throw two names out I think would be good. Clint Bell or Steve Kaiser. Again, I know nothing....just my two cents.

Who doesn't know Govenor Barnes?  JK .

I think you all are off.  I will put my two cents in and say with high conviction the new coach at Cov Cath is going to be Dave Johnson from Ryle.

Here is what I will predict Dr. Watson.

Since Cougar05 is the one who started this.

HMM who are the Cougars??? Who coached another private school in Nky??? Who also started another program in NKY???Who is young but with enough experience to be a head coach??? And who is available and looking to move up???

I would have to deduce the one being that Cougar05 is refering to would be the one and only.

Clint Bell.  I agree with you Mccoy.

I don't believe Steven Kaiser would leave SK with what he has going for him there.

Dave Johnson fills all the credential that you listed except coaching a private school.....I agree with trithis

GOO- I only know because I inquired about the position, was told it was filled and if I was interested in an Asst. coaching position I needed to contact a certain person in regards to it.

Alls I know is I wish cov cath and highlands has a team when I was in school. So that I could of taking some frustration from football out on them. Lol

The Breakdown...

Canter: starts a new chapter... well a new book. Retiring, time on side. knows how to build a program.

Bankemper: same boat as Canter but w/ more connections in the north.

Governor Barnes: he should run for office, something would get done, and heads would roll.  His kids go to Private school, HMMM! Makes sense, and he too has worked on a program from the dirt.

Johnson would be a good fit, helped start the Cooper program from the ground,  but he could very well be in line at Ryle should Ruschell step aside with TJ in college.

Gray:   Campbell assist. who also been waiting in the wings of Coach B

Bell: in same boat as the others, Badida been around since early 1900's. JK Has start up experience at Brossart (Catholic)

Spatola: spent alot of time on this side of the river, Catholic Elder grad.

Boyle: Former SK coach to State Championship 87, retired Superintendent, nothing better to do.

Why not cross the River to one of the Catholic schools like Moeller, LaSalle, Elder ?

Probably none of the above, probably hired Brian Kelly out of Notre Dame just to recruit wrestlers and a wrestling schlep for technique.

Here is what I will predict Dr. Watson.

Unfortunately that last attempt did not turn out well

I hear it's a raider coach. That's the rumore

I bet it's Mpire. A long awaited plan to find a home he can call his own, an Empire to build. One topic he has yet to comment on, he is sandbagging, gonna slip in the back door and surprise everyone.

I'd like to see him and Bishop Foys go a round or two!  My money is on the Bishop!

I doubt it's Bankamper or Grey ,

Spatola would be interesting !

I don't see Cov Cath being a powerhouse any Time soon regardless , to many public schools on the money in NKY CC is a dynasty , SK is tough and Ryle is determined and in a building phase if I could say that , CC dominated almost every school in Cincy , with the expectations of most private schools , i see a rocky road ahead , but tey could have some quick success with their football studs and ability to recruit , I hope not though

I agree with Mpire about taking time to build the program. They are not going to be contenders anytime soon imo. They will have a few strong guys in the upper weight classes 152 and up just because there athletes but as we all know wrestling is an art and strength alone will not get you to the state tourney unless your a heavyweight.

Something to think about....How many second string wrestlers would see this as a opportunity to be able to participate on the varsity level.  Many of the NKY second string wrestlers are better than other teams varsity wrestlers.  It all depends on how many parents want to shell out the money to go to Cov Cath.  Just some food for thought!

The quickest way for a team HS team to build and build quickly is to have a serious jr high team , The parents are usually still obsessive the kids are still in a stage in their life where they are forming habits and have the energy to works and learn and drill extensively to built a muscle

Memory that will aid them in yrs ahead , the problem with that as far as COV CATH will go is , unlike the public schools their jr high kids who could take extra advantage of the HS rule " I believe if you throw them

In the fire pan they will come out Golden "Cov Cath will have no jr high that can compete on its HS team to give them a head start ..

If I were a Private school coach that would be the first thing I looked into how to get Jr High kids on my team to even things up and give my team

A boost and a good relationship with my future wrestlers ,

And lol I was a decent dad coach for about a decade football and wrestling and no I can't beat anyone wrestling anymore and probably never could have ,and I was only ejected once and it was a football game :) over a conversation :) between me Stephen and our QB , damn refs listened in :) I said" pass pass" he thought I said dumb @$$ and when he asked me what I said he said no you said "" and I said no your a ""

So I got the boot ,

Never duiring a wrestling match although a dad did get mad at me once his kid was wrestling and I was coaching two matches at once as is the case in youth at times , setting in the corner of two matches at once little jr got pinned dad flipped on me told me to get a new job , I said no way this one pays to much , his kid always missed practice and i said if you brought him half the time to practice he might quit embarrassing you and you might quit embarrassing him and his team .

Either way I have always been ridiculed different roads lead to the same path , someone without a wrestling background who actually learns and has a different approach will get frowned upon because people are afraid of things they do not understand or of things out of the ordinary , . Depending on how determined a kid is or how obsessive his parents are , it is not that much of a stretch to think someone could create one of the best teams in the country from scratch .i know I could but will never get the chance , so I will just focus on the ATM .

That's what you get for picking on me another giant meaningless rambling post

I like your posts.

Cc is not a dynasty yet. I believe Ryle won 11 consecutive regional tourneys before last year. But all three top NKY teams are tough every year.

I think 11 is a stretch.  I know CC won it in 04, 11-4=7.  So I would say they probably won it for 7 strait years prior to last year.

Well They were State champs last yr and state duals champs this yr and are looking good at state again two yrs in a row of being a state champ of one sort or another IS a Dynasty , next yr Faust , ATM , Mathews , Spahr ,Maggard . Graziani "who will be the most improved wrestler in region six because I has a hunch "he wrestles ATM I mean actually goes after him , Sinclair ,and the others ,

Sounds like a DYNASTY to me , , but maybe they have to repeat to be a Dynasty , not 11 regionals , 3 or 4 state titles in a row some more National champs or AAs , it's a powerhouse team. No questions asked , the strongest ever in NkY , there I said it , but it's true ask anyone in Ohio what the best Ky team they ever saw was ,Sorry they won't say any of those 11 Ryle team , its CC tteam that Beat every team they faced in Ohio except graham the num 1 team in Ohio , not just a Dynasty ,,an Empire that reached across the river and layed the smack down .!!!!!!!!

And don't pull that. Newcomer stuff on me i have been around a bit!!!

Well ok ,they can officially be called. dynasty , in in a little over a week ,if that makes you feel any better

I like your posts.

Thanks ,I like your username, Kids should have to write it a thousand times a day

You guys sharing a room at the state tourney?  geez.

You guys sharing a room at the state tourney? geez.

Wow! Everyone b*#&#es when MPire says what most won't, then clowns when he is giving a true compliment. Why u wondering about the room, feeling bad you didn't get a key? Geez. Hahahahaha!

Just another topic being over run by CC. Oh crap I forgot I typed in CCwrestling.com. Let's just talk about the new program. How you think it will shape out and leave the "dynasty" talk for another place. I remember clicking on something about a new wrestling program starting in 2013 and not on something about how CC is a "dynasty"

GOO- St. X and Trinity have youth feeder programs.  One is River City, not sure of the name of the other.  Someone help me out with the name please.

Seriously, Irish Wrestler? It is the Shamrocks Wrestling Club.

Not from that area, that is why I asked for help!

yes they should Im constantly yelling 2 things keep your head up and get off your knees

You guys sharing a room at the state tourney? geez.

Lol!!! No I'm to hairy for him.... I just think he speaks the truth and speaks his opinion. I may not agree with his opinion all the time but oh well that's why it's his opinion

I didn't post on this thread untill someone mentioned my username , I brought up some

Interesting points and had no intention of posting anything on this thread , in case you haven't noticed this is a wrestling forum and your state champs and state dual champs will get talked about if it's to much simply Talk about things you like , of cov Cath gets going they will certainly be in closer proximity to Ohio than almost any other team it will be relevant to them ,

I also like Irish wrestlers subtle way of coaxing the second stringers to think about transferring to cov Cath lol ,

As for the Dynasty , your highness " Bankamper was mentioned and I said why would he leave a team that he has helped build into a dynasty and Raider argued that term , so it was an answer to why he would not leave CC for another CC ,

A side conversation started not by a CC person but a Ryle person ,

Wth are you going to fill a topic about a team that doesn't exist yet anyway with other than speculation and reasons for who will be coaching there or not ,if someone said Coach Ervin was

Going to coach at Cov Cath people

Would say why would he leave a dynasty like he has at Union lol ,

Way to much time spent on a topic about a nonexistent team when regionals and state are in a couple weeks , sorry I posted anything at all , I thought it was funny ,

Rumor has it that Covington Catholic is starting up in 2013. Sounds like the sport continues to grow in the Bluegrass!

Back to topic. When will this rumor grow some legs? As in: how far in advance do schedules get put together? Off season work outs should begin shortly after the season (in the form of FS/GR club)? Spatola's name came up. He would be a great "get". Is he ready to take the reigns of a program? This just might be a good place for him.

Lol you are being a bit sarcastic , fs gr club when they have never had a folkstyle match , I think people should see that you constantly mess with Ky folk , how many FS GR clubs are there in all of KY let alone on a team that hasn't gotten it's first wrestler yet , not many fs gr clubs in SW Ohio either ??? Sounds good though , I don't think spatola was a big fr gr guy either but I could be wrong maybe teach em a standup before a bow and arrow lol

Sorry to disappoint you, Mpire. I am not being sarcastic. I am asking honestly. Get the bee out of your bonnet. I am not "messing with Ky folk" either. I just posted a nice link to the Caleb Ervin discussions, giving props again. We all know that you need some type of antagonist, and you will go to lengths to create one. Why seek trouble where there is none? You picked the wrong dude here. So, to my question. If you believe that I am jumping the gun on the FS/GR stuff that is fair enough. By the way I have no clue as to SW Ohio clubs as I live hours north. My point of previous post was to find out when we might see some concrete evidence of the formation of a team at Covington Catholic.

If you live hrs north and are so innocent , why all the ky posts particularly about my kids and , Ryle who to me is very advanced and on the ball wrestling wise doesn't even have a FR GR club that I know of ,

Well I can tell you that they are starting a program in 2013-14 and they have a coach lined up for some time now. They have been meeting with him on a regular basis and are waiting for the season to end to make an announcement. I also believe that he has started putting his staff together so news should be coming soon.

I have answered this question for you before. I will do so one last time. I will type slowly to hopefully help you understand. Wrestling is a passion. Married a Kentucky girl with roots in Owensboro, Louisville, Lexington/Versailles, Paducah, Bowling Green.....her entire family has stayed in the Bluegrass. My interest in KY wrestling was piqued while visiting family near Cincinnati (7 or 8 years ago). We went to SWOWCA and I was impressed with the tenacity of the Ryle wrestlers. Up to that point I had little interest in KY wrestling. I have kept an eye on it ever since, and recent college success (Ruschell for instance) has kept me interested. Simon Kenton, Ryle, Campbell Co and others cross the river so I see results. As for posts on your boys, give me a break. I post on all sorts of stuff. I even create threads. Check your paranoia at the door. For the record, I am interested in high school wrestling in accompanying states. For instance, Rochester Mich (#7 in MI) just lost to Oxford in 2nd round of Michigan's team tournament. Oxford (#6) pulled off the upset against Davison (#2) in the next round by 1 point. Beat Brighton before getting smoked by Detroit Central Catholic. Now I am off to get together with folks to watch Penn St v Iowa.

Thanks for the info, wrasslr!

Lol you mean my paranoia ,that most of the Nky posters have noticed and mentioned before , lol , is the TE Rochester team CC beat at Hammer lol

Guess its good Cov Cath gets a team

, as I said making remarks about fr gr clubs at such an early juncture in a teams formation is a bit out of place and odd , to say the least

So kiss a little

But to throw everyone off your normal posts , anyone can check who and hate hat you normally post on lol and it ain't paranoia and it doesn't matter either your like some harmless nuisance who tries to se kind and knowledgable

With your little two faces compliments ,

Either way done with this thread .

And by the way , Raider knows I just like messing with him and I like cheer for and admire the Ryle team like

Many others , you on the other hand are an asshole , stick to your Ohio boards .

I didn't post on this thread untill someone mentioned my username , I brought up some

Don't blame me. And I don't know why anyone threw out dave johnson. Why would he leave a dynasty like Ryle?

Hey don't blame

Me either ,I would t leave a Dynasty like Ryles either , best tournament in the state and 11 or seven reg titles in a row lol , it's all good ,

And if my kids were at Ryle I would be explaining to everyone how Ryle was the best team ever in Nky , lol

I would say that if the two myers boys were at Ryle that they would be team state champs

Well two state champs on a lot of teams equals team state champs ???? ATM wanted to go to Trinity that would have been weird but they would have had two of the best 220s in the country

Well two state champs on a lot of teams equals team state champs ???? ATM wanted to go to Trinity that would have been weird but they would have had two of the best 220s in the country

No don't say that he wanted to go to a private school. Yuk...

He had his heart set on Elder , his friends from reading Pike and the others he played ball with ate there and his friend and one time teammate Orlando scales went there , heresy for a Colerain boy but he loved the Pit and he shadowed there and liked it , a more down to earth atmosphere I think , Stephen liked Moeller as did I despite all the wrestling Bs , if he never competed on sports I still would have , just didn't like some politics and the wait till next yr attitude when my boys time was then. I never made the switch to begin with though , all pointless he's a camel

Now the "Kentuckian " nothing to do with private For ATM he likes to win bott line and Trinitu football is bad ass

I hear that it's a done deal.......Dave Johnson from Ryle will be the Head Coach with Spatola as his assistant

Won't take them long if they get Wirth to buy-in.

Dave Johnson from Ryle what roll did he play there???  was he the head coach or an Asst??

Coach Johnson is assistant Coach at Ryle. He pretty much over sees the schedule and running the Rumble tournament. He only had 1 Head Coaching position and it was 1 year at Cooper High School when Dave Barnes left to take the Walton job. Coach Johnson will be a great fit at Cov Cath, if thats the direction they are going. Coach Johnson will surround himself with the right guys and I'm sure he'll put Cov Cath on the map in years to come. I wish him well.

Nice pick up if they have Spatola !!

Looks like Eric Slugantz is in the fold now as well......shaping up to be quite a staff

Talk about a takedown machine. Wow!

Saint Xavier 2013 State Champions...just sayn. The bulk of the posters on this form will never understand the motivation they provided those kids. Thank you!!!!

Saint Xavier 2013 State Champions...just sayn. The bulk of the posters on this form will never understand the motivation they provided those kids. Thank you!!!!

Ok...... Great job X, what's that got to do with Cov Cath?

The bulk of this forum has no idea how good some kids really are and the reasons some things happen the way they do , the bulk of this forum only knows kids in their region and rightly and perhaps about four coaches in the state can actually grasp just how good certain kids are .

Back to cov Cath , Spatola is head

Coach material with organization skills to go along with his wrestling know how , cov Cath will be in good hands ,

And x didn't change that much in two weeks they were the same team that lost miserably at state duals , an unseeded state format changes things a lot , a seeded tournament such as the Rumble is a much better gauge of how good a team is ,

Nice choice for head coach and well deserved. I hate to see him go but knew it was just a matter of time.

I hope some posters provide you with the motivation to produce a 220 that will be able to last more than the first period next yr ,

Probrably not. 220 will most likely be at the same strength that it has been for the past two years.

Heard that another former state champ has been added to the staff at Cov Cath.......David DeStefano (Simon Kenton)

Not sure how a private school can have a Youth program.

But didn't we hear this last year?

Goo, Moeller High school has a youth and middle school program that wrestles in the high school room. They're called ECCW (Eastern Cincinnati Catholic Wrestling). Just like any other club, you pay your fee, you join the team.

Not sure where everyone getting their information on the staff, it will be official next week...

Father Nelson will be taking the helm.

Is Father Nelson a full or a half???  (lol!  I couldn't resist!)

:)

Because there is not a middle school for CovCath, the feeder schools go from K-8 grades, there needs to be a club, and there is a club. The club to feed CovCath began two years ago. This isn't any different for most youth programs, they need to be clubs. Most middle schools can have a school sponsored program but they do not have to be school only, there can be, are there are many middle school programs. Regardless of CCH starting a high school program for the upcoming season or not there will be a new middle school club and the 3rd year of the Colonels Youth Wrestling Club for 2013-2014.
