Individual state champions

Topic ID: 907 | 36 Posts

I was just wondering how many schools have never had a state champ.  Does anyone out there have a spreadsheet showing each school and number of state champs?  For example:

Doss 0

Valley 0

Harrison County 2

Woodford County 38 (during Parks' tenure, not sure about total)

Its not a spreadsheet, but it list all the winners.

Yeah, I've seen that, but was hoping someone had done the hard work of counting the winners by team.  I was just wondering how many teams have never won a state title.  My guess is that there are quite a few; maybe half of the current teams?

Try this link.

Oops sorry that only shows the team titles.

Ranger I have the list of all the individuals that have wrestled in the state tourney since 1971.

It is broken down in teams.  Here is the list of state champions.  (This list is missing 1964-1970 and 1976.  I have not updated it to include 2006 either, and just got the 1976 state bracket, but still have not added it to the list.

Too late, I already did it.  I have 2006 included.  Very interesting; I was close.  About 34 teams still with a goose egg (not sure some of the teams are still competing), though some of the programs are relatively new (Letcher, Bullitt, Whitley, etc).  Woodford has a streak of 12 consecutive years with a winner (totaling 30 champions).  Next best streak is Simon Kenton with 7.  North Hardin had an amazing 13 year streak from 1964 to 1976.

Good Job Ranger123. Very interesting.

Ranger When did Flaget change to Male?

was it a change of name or redistricting with a new school?

East and West Hardin became Central in 1990 I think.

I don't know if the Flaget/Male change was officially a change.  That's just what I recall the way Louisville folks historically refer to it.  I don't really know the details.

Here's the numbers that I have. Mine are only since 1996 because thats as far as I've gotten.

And here is a chart of a regional analysis since 1996

Region  Last Year  Last 5 Yrs  Lifetime Total

1 0         3 11

2 1 5 9

3 1 1 1

4 0 4 14

5 4 16   25

6 1 13 29

7 5 15 38

8 2 13 25

This is interesting to review:

I am impressed with South Oldham's # of champions. They are definitely a top team in the past 10 yrs. They really help region 5 to be one of the top regions with champs in the past 5 - 10 yrs. I hadnt really thought of it but they had 3 State Champs last year, Murner, Scott and Scherer, thats really impressive to have 3 champs from one team. They have lost all three to graduation and it will be interesting to see how quickly they rebuild. They have some good kids returning, a deep squad with kids ready to step up and they have a solid middle school team to replenish the ranks through the years. Coach Fiser has built a nice program there. Does anyone know how long South Oldham has had a wrestling program?

The other team to rise to the top in the past 10 years is Larue, they are loaded this year with lots of seniors. They could add to their list of State Champs this year and then it will be their turn to rebuild.

Should be fun to see these relatively new powers utilize their depth to stay on top. Both schools are good examples of how programs develop and maintain consistency through good feeder programs and strong motivated coaching.

I'm not sure when South Oldham started a team, but I do have the following stats.

How does a guy with a login name bulldog-leader know so much about LaRue.

You would draw a conclusion this person was from John Hardin BullDawgs

There ismore than just one bulldog team in the bluegrass.  Look north young man.   8-)

Thanks to joe powers Southern now has a champ...

I don't know if the Flaget/Male change was officially a change.  That's just what I recall the way Louisville folks historically refer to it.  I don't really know the details.

Male is one of the oldest schools in louisville. Flaget did not change into male. Flaget closed and most of the kids went to St. X

I think Flaget became Holy Cross, can anyone confirm that?

Dupont Manual and Male used to be the same school. They divided up the original Dupont Manual and created Male. Ever wonder why Male uses the letter "H" instead "M"? Any alumni out there that can answer with the reason why?

Ever wonder why Male uses the letter "H" instead "M"?

I asked a Male student and they said that it was because Manual was already using the "M", the "H" stands for High School. :|  as if they were the only one.

I talked to a friend of mine who lived in Lou.  According to him Flaget closed.  Male built a new school to where old Flaget use to be years later.

OK so was it the downtown building that housed Flaget and then later Male before it moved out to Preston?

I think it was the old Bishop David that became Holy Cross.

I guess that's what I was thinking when I thought the two were "the same".

Holy Cross was actually the consolidation of Bishop David and some catholic girls school (which I can't remember right now).

Ranger could it have been St. Joseph? that combined with Biship David to make Holy Cross?

I just looked it up.  It was Angela Merici

Ranger,

I don't know what Louisville folks you have been talking to but Flaget High School was a private Catholic High school that served the West end of Louisville untill it closed in 1974. Louisville Male High School is a public school that has served the Jefferson county Public school system for more than 100 years. The two have not ever for any reason historic or not been related.

I can't blame any Louisville residents for this one.  I used to live there and made the comment based on my faulty memory.  See the post above and you will see what was going through my mind when I made the comment.

Your history of these teams is really impressive - from all of you! Good job right or wrong, you all put a lot of effort in you resarch

south oldham opened in fall of 1989, so the team that competed in the 1990 state tournament with their first ever team.

Manual and Male did use to be the same school.  However, it Male was not created from Manual.  Both schools were independent of each other and then merged back in the early 1900s for a few years.  Back over a century ago, Male only taught academics and there were no high schools for individuals who wanted "manual" trades.  You can see where I'm going with this, so eventually Manual was created for those students.  The schools split up around 1915.  Later on, the all famale high school in Louisville, which was created as a counterpart to Male merged with Manual to become a co-ed school and is what we refer to today as DuPont Manual H.S.  Male is the oldest high school in the state of Kentucky and if I'm not mistaken is the oldest west of the Alleghenies.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong.  Male is a public school, but it's traditional so you have to be accepted in order to attend.  Male doesn't have a "home district" to speak of like the other JCP schools so the school doesn't have to accept a student who lives in their district.  You almost certainly have to be either already in the traditional school program, a legacy or a good athlete to get in.  Sorry for the last one, but it's true.

The "H" does stand for High School because at the time, it was the only high school so that's why they used the "H".  And yes, Flaget was an arch rival of Male.  Not quite on the level of Manual, but close.  Trust me, my Dad, brother, 4 uncles & 3 cousins all attended Male and played football for them so I've heard the stories plenty of times.

Great job on the state champs by region, but wasn't there two in region 6 (Brown 145, Bradford 189)

Me and Coach Carr did some counting, Woodford County actually has 56 state champions.

Correction Christian Co. has had 25 individual state champs since 1973

My mistake it was 22
