2013 NCAA Fun Facts
Willie Saylor, Editor
Every year after NCAA’s we like to digest the brackets, check out the interesting side notes and historical achievements.
Of course Kyle Dake made history in becoming the first wrestler to ever win four titles at four different weights. Quentin Wright and Jordan Oliver both finished their careers as 2x Champs, 3x Finalists, and 4x All Americans. Logan Stieber is still on the 4-for-4 plan.
Those are the stars. But there are dozens of other intriguing facts to be gleaned from the brackets. Steve Santos, with his 3rd place finish, became Columbia’s highest placer in NCAA history. David Bonin of Norther Iowa, became just the fourth individual from the state of Louisiana to earn All American honors.
I enjoy these types of things. As a wrestling fan that loves parity, it’s good to see individuals from ‘smaller’ states and programs to experience success. It was interesting, for instance, to see Robert Kokesh and Logan Storley, the only two All Americans from South Dakota this year, wrestle for 3rd at 174lbs.
And I have to admit, a little part of me was rooting for Ricky Durso, who was Franklin & Marshall’s first EIWA Champ since 1994, to keep his good fortune going.
Here are other miscellany: odds and ends, interesting tidbits, and a few reflections.
Road Warriors:
These gentlemen lost first round but came back to claim All American status:
125: Jarrod Garnett (6th), David Thorn (7th)
133: Mike Nevinger (5th)
157: RJ Pena (5th)
157: James Green (7th)
Just Like They Drew It Up:
There was just one bracket, 133, where the eight placers were the top eight seeds. In fact, seeds 1-4 (Stieber, Ramos, Graff, and Schopp) placed exactly in that order. 165 had the top four seeds all place top four, but the #3 (Yates) and #4 (Caldwell) were flipped.
Semi-slide
These semifinalists lost their next two to take 6th.
149 - Drake Houdashelt, MIZZ
