State Tournament Length Question

Topic ID: 9700 | 11 Posts

I know I am probably behind on the news, but tought I'd throw this out for responses.  The KHSAA has decided to move the boy's and girl's Sweet 16 tournament finals to Sunday.  One of the reasons stated was that it gave the athletes more time to recouperate for finals.  Now I may not be thinking straight here, but basketball has a much longer time in between semi finals and finals than wrestling does.  I know it is really all about the money, but they cut the state wrestling tournament from three days to two and lenghten the basketball tournaments from  four days to five so the kids can rest.  This doesn't seem right.  I played basketball in high school and college.  I can tell you one thing for sure, my sons who wrestle work much harder than I ever had to playing basketball!  Another thing, you can purchase a program on line for this year basketball state tournament.  They printed them after the fact.  I am checking to see if they printed a wrestling program after the tournament also.  Has anyone heard anything on that matter?

I get where you are going, but one of the reasons the wrestling state tournament was an extra day was that there was only 4 mats that could be used.  Now that they could use up to 10 if they choose too, the time delays because of that is no longer and issue, hence the reduction of a day.

The way it is seeded now it should be cut to two days -- 16 man Bracket - so then there could be less of an excuse not to seed the tournament .

I was told the tourney itself is held so early in the season because of Basketball , which seems odd !

Mpire, I didn't put this topic on here to start a debate about seeding. They aren't going to seed it so let's just not go there.   My point was that they reduced the time for the wrestlers to have a break, but increased the amount of rest time for basketball.  Also, like I said, I know it has to do with money.  Yes wrestling ends earlier here in KY because of basketball.  Basketball will always take precedence over wrestling.  It makes more money.  That is just a fact that we as a wrestling community have to accept.

Also, you can download the 2013 state wrestling program on the KHSAA website by going to state tournament documents.

I think the thought process is that it takes more time to recover from a basketball game than from a wrestling match.  If one plays the entire game I would agree with this.  A basketball game is 40 minutes, high school and college, while a high school match is only 6 minutes, 7 for college.  While basketball gets more breaks and is less intense the sheer length of time would be draining and therefore more difficult to recuperate from.

A few things ,

I understand what and why you posted. A 16 man bracket would increase time between matches thus one of the reasons for my post .

Your own comments about a match or tourny day vs a game are as debatable as anyone's ,

I did nothing to cause any more of a debate than yourself I merely added my own thoughts and more reasons for a smaller tournament , mine making as much or more common sense than any other .

Another thing , as a wrestling community nothing needs to be bowed down to or accepted when it is in the best interest of the sport and its kids , that's weak talk that leads to getting ran over by other sports and those less passionate or less Lasy than those willing to settle

For second best .

Wrestling puts a different stress on a person altogether than Basketball , No one will launch you through the air to come crashing down to a mat in basketball or snatch you by your head and arm launch you over their hip and hold you to the mat while your head is being squeezed an you are struggling for dear life to escape , no one will repeatedly send you crashing to the ground in order to score lol a bit different , wrestling is more on par with a tough man fight that totally wears an individual down over a few minute rounds while basketball is far less martial explosive or dangerous sport by nature .

The comparison is laughable ,

Sorry to have invaded your thread with legitimate responses that actually had more to do with the topic than most replies ,

Every such post is debatable or controversial by nature and will bring forth responses sometimes

Backed with actual legitimate reasons for agreeing or disagreeing with a topic , and if its personal oh well I could care less I only have one son left wrestling and he could wrestle 1 or a dosen a day and walk away with a smile so I really don't care .

HS basketball is actually 32 minutes.

By no means was I trying to say that Basketball was a tougher sport than wrestling.  I am glad your son could wrestle a dozen matched in one day and come off the mat smiling.  I was trying to make a point for those wrestlers without super powers

As was I .

I don't think it has anything to do with being second best, or bowing down to basketball.  It's a compromise, we allow basketball their own time for their post season and they leave us alone with things like starting the season early in November and allowing us to have a loose point system for scheduling.

If you would have been around in the 80s when there were only about 50 teams with wrestling and we were on the brink of loosing the state sanction, you might understand why this concession was allowed.  The wrestling community in KY has been left alone for the most part by KHSAA.  We have a middle school state tourney and a grade school state tourney.  What other sports have those in KY?  We even have a JV state tourney most years.  We also have the state duals which could be compared to the all A classic in basketball, which is not run by KHSAA (Thank goodness).

As for the time I like the 2 day tourney, it's much better than the 3 day tourney.  Less stress on the kids to make weight 3 times in a row and less physical  stress on the body, of both the wrestlers and the spectators.  (I mean old farts like me)(man bleacher butt sucks)  And I've already given my 2cents worlth on solving the seeding problem.

Thanks GOO :)
